Staying Happy and Healthy This Winter

Getting through the upcoming winter with your health and spirits intact may be difficult but it is not impossible.  Here are some suggestions for a happier, healthier winter:

Fight the Flu

Since cold and flu season is fast approaching:

  • Wash your hands with soap and warm water is the best defense.  If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based antibacterial product.

  • Get a flu shot to reduce your risk of infection by 90%.  There is a nasal spray vaccine available if you don’t like needles.

  • Take a multivitamin every day.

  • Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

  • Get plenty of sleep.

Winterize your skin

Cold, dry air causes itchy, dry skin, as does turning on the heat in our homes.  To keep your skin supple during the winter months:

  • Switch to oil-based moisturizers and apply them often to your face and body.

  • Protect your hands by using a heavy-duty hand cream and wear gloves outdoors.

  • Protect your lips against chapping by wearing a moisturizing lip balm.

  • Use a humidifier in your home to add moisture to the air.

Banish the “winter blues” with exercise
Staying active in the winter months can lift your mood, help your immune system, and control your weight.

  • Walking is the least stressful exercise for your body.  Walk indoors at the local mall, gym, YMCA/YWCA, or wellness center.

  • Join an exercise group for your physical and mental well-being; the exercise will benefit your body and the companionship will bolster your spirits.

  • Check out an exercise video for your local library
