Our first snow of the season has softly fallen, and it made me recognize again that there is something pristinely magical about first snows. They alert us to the passage of time, to the changing of seasons. That’s why we so often remark upon them (“The first snow came early this year.”)
If our loved ones are terribly ill, bedridden, or heavily medicated, their sense of seasonal changes can be greatly diminished. Sharing a small milestone with them – like the first snow of the season -- is one way to help them mark the passage of time and to feel connected to the world outside their door.
