Making a Wish List

Most of us can remember the lyrics to the holiday song; “…making a list and checking it twice…”  The holiday season is an opportunity for you to make your list and share it with others who want to know what you need the most.

Some ideas may include:

Respite: Some caregivers ask for time off from caregiving duties as a gift for the holidays. This means another family member or close friend gives you a break from your responsibilities. Asking for a day off within the next month may be easier to accommodate into their schedules. If this is not possible, perhaps they would consider paying for a home care worker or for your loved one to have a brief stay at a respite facility.

Care for you: How about a gift certificate for a massage, facial, or manicure? How about an opportunity to spend the day shopping, fishing or a visiting with a friend?  What would make you relaxed and restored?

Home repairs: Do light bulbs need changing in your house, or do you need to install grab bars? Does the car need an oil change, or does that overwhelming pile of junk in the garage need to go to the dump? Tasks such as these may be the perfect way for a family member or friend to help out if providing personal care is too uncomfortable for them.

Time savers: What would save you time and energy?  Having a prepared meal made that can be easily frozen and reheated at a later time, or having a month’s supply of meal-on-wheels provided? Having a house cleaning service visit monthly?

What’s on your wish list this year?
