Those who suffer from chronic pain know its debilitating effects. Prolonged pain can be so overwhelming and all-consuming that we seldom think it has a purpose. Kent F. Richards, a deeply spiritual physician, has recently noted that pain can often be a gauge of healing. But he also believes that pain is a teacher: he contends that pain teaches us about patience and forbearance in ways we could not otherwise learn.
Perhaps, he suggests, this is why we call the sick “patients.”
