Than oats! Those of us of a certain age may remember the old advertising campaign that stressed the health benefits of eating oatmeal. As it turns out, the commercial world was on to something – something very timely as cold weather makes oatmeal a breakfast “comfort food” and as our nation celebrates National Oatmeal Month.
Oatmeal (whether ground, crushed, rolled, or cut) is a wonderful source of both soluble and insoluble fiber, protein, iron, and vitamins B and E. A growing body of evidence suggests that oatmeal:
· Lowers blood cholesterol
· Reduces the risk of some types of heart disease
· Has cancer-fighting properties
· Reduces the risks of Type 2 diabetes
· Fights constipation
· Generally adapts well to special diets and is tolerated well by those with swallowing problems.
Physicians and nutritionists regularly recommend oatmeal as a diet staple for those looking to control their weight, achieve a healthier metabolism, or improve their overall digestive health.
Oatmeal can be endlessly adapted to our needs. For example, using milk instead of water in oatmeal helps us add more calcium to our loved ones’ diets; using an artificial sugar can sweeten the taste while eliminating sugar; and oatmeal can easily be enhanced with protein powders and fresh fruit.
So that porridge packs a punch!
